Derek Jeter is one of the most iconic players in Yankees history. But who is the man behind the icon? And what really happened during his time in pinstripes?
"The Captain" looks to answer that question. The seven-part docs-series, directed by three-time Emmy winner — and Bronx native — Randy Wilkins, will dig into the true details about what went down during Jeter's 20-year tenure with the Bronx Bombers.
The series looks to be all-encompassing, detailing everything from Jeter's upbringing to his Hall-of-Fame career to his failed ownership of the Miami Marlins and his journey into fatherhood. Similar to "The Last Dance", which profiled Michael Jordan and the Bulls dynasty of the 1990s, "The Captain" will blend present-day interviews with archival footage in an attempt to retell the story of the Yanks of the '90s.
Jeter has already spoken about aspects of the documentary, including his feud with A-Rod and the infamous rumor of providing gift baskets to women he was intimate with.
You know, you see it, and then it’s like, how the f— did people come up with this? You know, basically, that’s it. And who would believe this s— And you believed it! I remember being at a Starbucks one time and there’s some random guy behind me and he says, ‘Hey, I just want to let you know that I’m giving out gift baskets because you did.’ And I turned around and said, ‘You’re a f—in’ idiot!’ and the look on his face — Like, did he think I was gonna say, ‘Yeah, good job, man!’ It’s a story that became larger than life. People keep regurgitating this story that never happened. Never happened.
