After being sidelined by back pain and a sore hamstring for months, Mets third baseman and captain David Wright could begin limited baseball activities as early as next week, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

Wright was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 15 with a strained right hamstring and later was diagnosed with spinal stenosis during his rehab, causing another setback. He could rejoin the team after the All-Star break if he is cleared for baseball activities next week.

Manager Terry Collins, who has spoken with Wright in the past few days, told reporters that Wright is the most upbeat he’s been “in a long time” as his physical therapy with back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins continues in Los Angeles. Wright is expected to meet with the team and better gauge his return later this week when the Mets head west to play the Dodgers.

Wright, 32, previously missed six weeks at the end of the 2013 season after he strained the same hamstring. Multiple injuries have limited him to one full season since 2010.
