No member of the Boston Red Sox will wear No. 34 again as David Ortiz's iconic jersey will join the franchise's greatest players on the right-field facade at Fenway Park.
Boston will retire No. 34 in Ortiz's honor at a ceremony next season, the club announced Sunday during a celebration of his career.
Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice, two of the players who have their numbers retired, greeted Ortiz Sunday to congratulate him on the honor. Also in attendance were Ortiz's former teammates Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew.

Nine other Red Sox players have had their numbers retired: Ted Williams (9), Joe Cronin (4), Bobby Doerr (1), Rice (14), Yastrzemski (8), Carlton Fisk (27), Wade Boggs (26), Johnny Pesky (6) and Martinez (45).
Boston fans don't want to see Ortiz call it quits as he enjoys one of his best seasons at the plate. Entering Sunday, Big Papi leads MLB in doubles (48), extra-base hits (87), slugging percentage (.625), and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.028). He is tied for second in RBIs (127), is ninth in average (.317), and sixth in on-base percentage (.404).
Ortiz and the Red Sox will continue their historic run in the postseason in the AL Division Series against the Cleveland Indians.
