The rebuilding Phillies have added a veteran arm to their pitching staff, acquiring right-hander Clay Buchholz from the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Boston will get minor-league second baseman Josh Tobias in return as it unloads the $13.5 million due in the final year of Buchholz's contract.

Buchholz, 32, has spent his entire career in the Red Sox organization and experienced plenty of highs and lows along the way. Last season was more of the latter, with an 8-10 record and 4.78 ERA in 37 appearances (21 starts).

Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, but he has been an All-Star twice and has shown he can be brilliant when he puts it all together. It's just a matter of doing so and sustaining it.

Tobias, 24, hit .291/.362/.422 in 127 games for a pair of Single-A teams last season.
