The St. Louis Cardinals are on the verge of elimination. A loss on Friday or a win by the New York Mets will seal their fate for the 2024 season.
If they want to contend in 2025, they'll need to fill some holes. Paul Goldschmidt is a free agent at the end of the season, and they may need to replace them.
Zachary Pressnell of FanSided listed Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander as somebody they'll need to target in order to bounce back into contention.
"The Cardinals outfielder struggled for a good portion of the season. Specifically, they didn't hit for much power," Pressnell wrote. "St. Louis needs an impact bat in their outfield and Santander would be the perfect option to take on."
Santander certainly picked a good time to have his breakout season. Though his average sits at just .238, the 29-year-old has hit 42 home runs, driven in 97 runs, and posted an .821 OPS.
If the Cardinals give him the right offer, he could potentially be lured to St. Louis as the team tries to bounce back into contention for 2025.
Signing a few free agents won't fix all the Cardinals problems, as there are other deeply rooted issues within the organization, but adding Santander would certainly help. They need a big bat to bolster their offense, and he could be the piece that gets them over the hump.
It will be interesting to see if St. Louis decides to target the veteran outfielder.
