The St. Louis Cardinals are a team that is in need of a rebuild after missing the postseason for the second consecutive year.
This of course will require them to take a step back from contending in 2025 and maybe even 2026. They could ultimately ship off some of their more expensive veteran players such as ace Sonny Gray.
Christopher Kline of FanSided listed the Baltimore Orioles as a possible fit for Gray if the Cardinals do indeed shop him, noting that Baltimore may need an ace if Corbin Burnes walks in free agency.
This move would of course signal that the Cardinals do not plan to be contenders in 2025, which may be a tough pill to swallow for some fans.
However, the team can get a lot of young prospects in exchange for Gray. Baltimore has Coby Mayo on the position player side and Cade Povich and Chayce McDermott on the pitching side.
All could be included in a trade for Gray and could help the Cardinals expedite their rebuild and return to contention as quickly as possible.
The team needs to get younger, and this would be a good way for them to hit the reset button and start fresh.
It will be interesting to see if the Cardinals get any takers for Gray should they shop him.
Other veterans that could be shopped include Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Miles Mikolas, and Steven Matz.
