After several years of rebuilding, the Detroit Tigers have emerged as a legitimate contender once again. Even after selling at the trade deadline, they went on a roll and reached the postseason.
They trail the American League Division Series by a game after dropping the opener to the Cleveland Guardians. This offseason, they could potentially use a power bat.
Josh Jacobs of FanSided listed Detroit as a possible fit for Willson Contreras in the event that the St. Louis Cardinals trade him as part of their upcoming rebuild.
Detroit already has Jake Rogers as their starting catcher, but it wouldn't hurt for them to add an extra bat to their mix and even hand the reins over to Contreras if he is acquired.
The Tigers have a young team and could certainly give St. Louis a good haul in return for Contreras.
The veteran catcher would also be able to reunite with his former Chicago Cubs teammate in Javier Baez. The two were part of the Cubs' 2016 World Series championship team.
The Tigers are clearly focused on winning after several years of rebuilding. The time has come for them to make some big moves and supplement their young core with more pieces.
The future is certainly bright for the Tigers after their second-half run. Contreras would give them another veteran who could mentor some of their younger players.
It will be interesting to see if Detroit can put together a compelling package to land him.
