Bob Melvin took the A's to the postseason in his first three full seasons as manager in Oakland. He's headed for a last-place finish this year but apparently will be sticking around for a while.

The team will announce a contract extension for Melvin at a press conference Wednesday afternoon, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Melvin already is under contract through next season but will have more years added to his deal with the new pact.

The Chronicle reported last month that an extension was likely, adding that it also wouldn't be a surprise to see the A's follow the lead of other teams by promoting top baseball executive Billy Beane from general manager to president of baseball operations or an equivalent title, with his longtime assistant David Forst becoming GM.

Melvin, who turns 54 next month, is 385-339 since replacing Bob Geren as A's manager in June 2011. Overall, he has an 878-847 mark in 12 years as a big-league manager in Oakland, Arizona and Seattle, reaching the postseason four times.

The A's jettisoned several players at the trade deadline this year and entered Wednesday's games at 60-79 and in last place in the AL West.
