To punctuate his first season with the Blue Jays, third baseman Josh Donaldson was voted American League MVP on Thursday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

After spending his first four seasons with the Athletics, Donaldson moved to Toronto last offseason after Oakland traded him for far less in return. Donaldson, aka "The Bringer of Rain," received 23 first-place votes — 16 more than runner-up Angels outfielder Mike Trout.

Donaldson sported a .297/.371/.939 slash line with 41 home runs and 123 RBIs. He also drew 73 walks, stole six bases and finished with an 8.8 WAR.

"Our team was just so great that I was blessed to be in this situation," Donaldson said on MLB.com. "I think I was able to take advantage of the gifts given me. I'm kind of speechless right now."

The Blue Jays went 93-69 last season, good for first in the AL East. Donaldson then led Toronto to the ALCS, where they ultimately lost to the World Series-champion Royals.

Trout finished second with 304 total points, Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain finished third with 225 points, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado finished fourth with 158 points and Astros Cy Young award pitcher Dallas Keuchel finished fifth with 107 points.

Trout has now finished runner-up for the third time in four years.
