Alex Anthopoulos is stepping down as general manager of the Blue Jays, TSN.ca reported.

The report cited multiple unnamed sources. It was later confirmed by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Anthopoulos rejected a contract extension offer to remain with the team, which added former Indians GM Mark Shapiro to the front office in August.

Shapiro will become the Blue Jays' president and CEO next week, taking over for Paul Beeston, who is retiring.

The Blue Jays (93-69) won the AL East before falling to the Royals in the ALCS.

Anthopoulos’ decision comes as a surprise. Rosenthal reports the departure was over the changing dynamic in Toronto's front office.

"All I can say is I love being here, I love Toronto, I’ve always maintained that, and that’s probably as far as I’d go with that,” Anthopoulos said during the playoffs, referring to contract negotiations.

Anthopoulos oversaw the addition of Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki and David Price, among others, in positioning the Blue Jays as a playoff team.
