Bartolo Colon's scoreless innings streak passes Cy Young, Warren Spahn image

Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon made history on the mound and with his bat Thursday against the Braves.

With his 28th straight scoreless inning pitched, Colon passed Cy Young and Warren Spahn (27 apiece) as hurlers aged 42 or older to hold opponents without a run for that many frames.

Colon began the streak Aug. 26 with seven shutout innings against the Phillies, then proceeded to hold the Red Sox (one inning on Aug. 29), Phillies (eight innings on Aug. 31) and Marlins (nine innings on Sept. 5) scoreless before keeping the Braves off the scoreboard through the first three innings Thursday, breaking the record.

The ageless wonder would go on to throw three more scoreless frames in Atlanta before allowing a RBI triple to Jace Peterson in the seventh. Colon fell just shy of breaking the Mets franchise record owned by R.A. Dickey (32 2/3 innings).

Colon also helped his cause with a two-out single into center field for his fourth RBI of the season, a new career high. Hitting experts broke down the magic of his success in the batter's box.
