The Astros won a bidding war for Gurriel in July, agreeing to a five-year, $47.5 million deal after he was declared a free agent in June.

Gurriel batted .500/.589/.874 with 15 home runs and 51 RBIs in 49 games last season in the Cuban National Series. He’s played in 15 minor league games for the Astros, batting .250/.262/.429 with two homers and 14 RBIs.

To make room on the roster for Gurriel, Tyler White has been optioned to Triple-A.
