Astros right fielder Josh Reddick was unhappy with Yankees fans during his team's 4-1 victory Tuesday in Game 3 of the ALCS as he said people threw water bottles and objects onto the field at Yankee Stadium.
“There’s no place in the game for that kind of thing, no matter what happens,” Reddick said (per NJ.com). “It’s just a matter of them being upset about a call that could’ve gone the other way but there’s no place for that in baseball.
“I think I saw about seven or eight water bottles out in the outfield, two baseballs got thrown from center to left. It’s scary. I don’t think a lot of people realize how dangerous that can really be. You throw a baseball hard enough and it hits somebody in the head when you’re not looking, it can do some damage to you as a player. It’s definitely disrespectful and at the same time, unsafe.”
Reddick went on to explain that he often hears taunts while he's playing in New York, including chants of "you suck," but those messages from fans only intensified after he homered in the second inning to give the Astros a 2-0 lead.
“I couldn’t really understand them. It was so loud and there were so many of them, everybody at the same time was saying all kinds of different things,” Reddick said. “I’m sure it was a lot of stuff I can’t really repeat on camera.”
Reddick added that he was surprised fans didn't reach out and catch Didi Gregorious' fly ball to right field.
"When I looked at the video, there were about 30 people screaming at the top of their lungs at me but I didn’t hear a word of it," Reddick said. "It was a pretty panicky situation, but a huge sigh of relief when I got it.”
With Tuesday's win, the Astros now hold a 2-1 series lead heading into Game 4 Wednesday at 8:08 p.m. ET.
