Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker suffered a skull fracture and other injuries when he was hit in the head Sunday by a vicious comebacker off the bat of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager.

With the ball traveling 105 mph when it left Seager's bat in the second inning, Shoemaker was given every precaution as he was helped to a local hospital to undergo a CT scan. The scan revealed the small skull fracture and a small hematoma, the Angels announced. Shoemaker will see a neurologist, the team said.

After staying on the ground for an extended period after being hit, Shoemaker ultimately got up while holding a towel to his cut head. He received a standing ovation from the Seattle crowd as he walked to the dugout, according to the New York Daily News.

Shoemaker had allowed one hit with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings before the incident.
