After Albert Pujols underwent surgery on his toe and right foot during the offseason, it seemed unlikely that he'd be ready for the start of the season.

But Pujols' recovery is progressing nicely and the slugger is expected to be in the starting lineup opening day, MLB.com reported Monday.

According to the report, the Angels are still unsure whether Pujols will immediately be able to play first base, but he has been unrestricted in batting practice. He just needs to receive clearance to run at full speed.

Pujols had a sub-par .244/.307/.480 slash line last season but did hit 40 home runs and have 95 RBIs.

The Angels need Pujols to stay healthy this season to help take some of the attention off Mike Trout.
