The action gets going early as Astros rookie phenom Carlos Correa hits a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Yankees bounce back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI hit from Carlos Beltran. In the bottom of the second, Chase Headley looks to tie it up with a shot to center but Carlos Gomez makes an outstanding play, leaping at the wall and robbing him of a solo shot, keeping the score 2-1.
That score holds until the bottom of the fifth when the Yankees' bats wake up. Didi Gregorius hits a two-out, two-run home run to right. The next batter, Jacoby Ellsbury, hits one out to right as well. The Astros answer in the top of the sixth as George Springer leads off with a home run. Two hits later, Tanaka gets the hook in favor of Andrew Bailey. After a sacrifice fly and a hit, the Astros take a 5-4 lead.
It stays that way until the bottom of the ninth with Luke Gregerson in to close for Houston. With the tying run on first base and two outs, the Yankees get a walk and then an RBI single by Stephen Drew. Ellsbury then hits one up the middle for the walkoff win. New York advances, 6-5.
Final score: Yankees 6, Astros 5
Player of the Game: Jacoby Ellsbury: 2 for 4, home run, three RBIs
Winning pitcher: Justin Wilson
Losing pitcher: Luke Gregerson
