There's no question the New York Yankees are doing everything they can to make sure Juan Soto remains in pinstripes.
Even though he and his agent, Scott Boras, have maintained the notion that they are waiting until free agency to sign his next deal, the Yankees still need to do their due diligence.
According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Soto and owner Hal Steinbrenner had a private meeting in July.
"The previously unreported meeting, between the market’s top free agent and the owner of one of baseball’s most well-heeled franchises, took place at Yankee Stadium in July, inside a room near the home clubhouse," Kuty wrote.
While no specifics regarding the conversation were reported, Kuty wrote that the conversation was more about how Soto felt he was fitting in with the organization and what the team could do to "enhance the experience of playing for them" from a new player's perspective.
The Yankees will have to open their checkbooks for Soto this offseason, and there will be plenty of other teams vying for the superstar's services.
It remains to be seen what will happen when the winter rolls around, but the Yankees hope this meeting increased their chances of re-signing the 25-year-old star.
