The New York Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Will Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet to Triple-A, the team announced Saturday.
With two games remaining in the regular season, the Yankees are still looking to lock up to the top seed in the American League playoffs.
At the same time, they need to keep all of their available bullpen arms fresh for the American League Division Series, which is scheduled to begin Oct. 5.
Warren was called up earlier in the season as a spot starter. One of the top prospects in the organization, Warren struggled mightily in five starts.
The 25-year-old went 0-3 with a 9.55 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched, allowing 24 runs (23 earned), 31 hits, four home runs and a 1.85 WHIP.
Warren was optioned to Triple-A on Sept. 1. Since then, he's made three starts with the RailRiders, going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 innings pitched.
Poteet was recalled earlier this week as Mark Leiter Jr. was placed on the paternity list. He tossed 3.1 innings on Sept. 25 against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing three hits, one run and one walk while striking out three.
Because Poteet must wait 15 days to be recalled after being optioned, he will be ineligible for the Division Series roster — though it was a long shot he was going to make the roster anyway.
