The New York Yankees already wrapped up the division crown earlier this week, but they have a chance to take the top spot in the American League as well.
The final two games of the regular season take place Saturday and Sunday as the Yankees host the Pittsburgh Pirates in The Bronx.
Entering Saturday's matchup, the Yankees (93-67) have the best record in the American League, holding a one-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians (92-68).
With two games remaining, there are two ways the Yankees can clinch the top seed in the American League.
Either they win one of the final two games against the Pirates or the Guardians lose one of their final two games against the Detroit Tigers, who miraculously clinched a playoff spot with a 5-2 win on Friday night.
Because the Yankees won the season series over the Guardians 4-2, Cleveland would have to win its next two games and the Yankees would have to lose the next two games in order for them to take the top spot.
Both teams already secured a first-round bye so they are playing for home-field advantage throughout the American League playoffs.
Either way, the Yankees will be keeping a close eye on the wild card series next week before hosting their opponent in the divisional round.
