New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo was transferred to the 60-day injured list, the team announced Wednesday.

The move was made in correspondence to the activation of starting pitcher Gerrit Cole, who made his 2024 debut against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

Rizzo suffered a fractured radial neck in his right arm when he collided with Boston Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino on Sunday night.

Rizzo was initially put on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday but considering his timeline for recovery is eight weeks, it makes sense to put him on the 60-day injured list.

The 34-year-old lefty does expect to return when he's fully healed from the fracture. He told the media that he will likely go four-to-five weeks without baseball activities before ramping up a rehab assignment.

In the meantime, the Yankees called up Ben Rice from Triple-A, and he will platoon with DJ LeMahieu at first base.

Rizzo was struggling with a .630 OPS and 79 OPS+, both of which would be the lowest marks of his career since his rookie season in 2011.

With the trade deadline looming, the Yankees will need to asses their standing at the position so this certainly makes for an interesting situation to monitor while Rizzo heals up.
