For the second time in the month of May, New York Yankees rookie Luis Gil made franchise history as he continues an incredible stretch.

The hard-throwing right-hander dazzled in his final start during the month of May against the Los Angeles Angels. Gil tossed 8.0 innings of one-run ball while striking out nine, walking two batters and allowing just two hits.

Capping off an incredible month of May, Gil recorded a 0.70 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 38.2 innings pitched. He is the only pitcher in Yankees history with at least 40 strikeouts and a sub-0.75 ERA in any calendar month, according to Katie Sharp.

With Gerrit Cole on the injured list working his way back from elbow nerve inflammation, Gil has been the X-factor for the starting rotation. The entire unit has been pitching well above expectations, but Gil has been the group's biggest surprise.

Earlier in the month, Gil broke the single-game franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the rotation when Cole comes back because removing Gil simply isn't in the equation.
