Well this doesn't happen often. The Dodgers after their 8-3 loss to the Giants on Wednesday night are now 9-9 in the month of July. Worse yet, they're on the brink of being outscored in the month which would bring to an end their ridiculously-long run of outscoring opponents over the span of a month.
Opponents have outpaced the Dodgers on the scoreboard 105-80 in July, putting them at minus-25 run differential in the month with only six games left to play. One of those games is against the Giants, then they'll have three in Houston and two at San Diego before turning the calendar to August. Assuming they don't make up the 25-run difference it will mark the first time since September of 2017 (45 months) that LA has been outscored for a month.
We checked in on this earlier in the calendar and they were in effectively the same spot. A .500 record for the month and behind on the scoreboard. They've continued playing .500 ball, but their wins are narrower than their losses. Their series against the Giants is a prime example. LA won two of the first three, but they're minus-one in run differential thanks to 3-2 and 5-2 wins with an 8-3 loss.
While the streak ending would be a bummer, the fact is the Dodgers are still 7.5 games up in their division and within 3.5 of the Phillies for the No. 1 spot in Major League Baseball. That'll be what ultimately matters is if they can keep pace in the standings, which they've done in July whether the long streak continues or not.
