The Dodgers on Friday announced Max Muncy was transferred to the 60-day IL as part of a move that also saw pitcher Kyle Hunt activated to the 40-man roster. Hunt was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Muncy went down after he felt something in his oblique while taking batting practice in the middle of May. He played on May 15, and was placed on the 10-day IL on May 17.
It initially didn't sound like there was much concern about his long-term prognosis, but the first whiff of bad news came when he suffered a setback in early June that caused him to be shutdown indefinitely. Now he's on the 60-day IL and whether he's able to return for the 2024 season is not entirely clear.
Los Angeles's offense struggled badly without Muncy for the rest of May and into the early portion of June, but they've stabilized some and have been able to piece together enough production at third base to get by.
Muncy this season is batting .223 with a .323 on-base percentage in 167 plate appearances across 40 games. He had nine home runs, eight doubles, 21 walks and 50 strikeouts.
