The Chicago Cubs are likely to miss the postseason after they decided to sell off a few pieces at the trade deadline. They own a record of 57-60 and sit in fourth place in the National League Central.
Chicago is 9 1/2 games back of first place and five games out in the Wild Card race. But they have contending in 2025 in mind, and insider Jon Heyman believes that they might target a top free agent.
"It's been a great six years in Queens with [Pete] Alonso," Heyman wrote. "But at this point, I might not bet against the Cubs, who need a bopper."
The Cubs do indeed need some thump in their lineup. Adding Isaac Paredes in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays was a big move and should help them offensively in 2025, but they could use some more help.
The Cubs have Michael Busch playing first base this season and could use some more power out of that position, especially from the right side of the plate.
Alonso is hitting .246 with 25 home runs, 63 RBI, and an .807 OPS. While the average is down a little, he still is hitting for plenty of power and is a force in the middle of the Mets lineup.
It will be interesting to see what the Cubs do this offseason, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see them make a run at Alonso, as they have been linked to him in the past.
