The Chicago Cubs may be a team to watch in free agency this offseason.
They could be in the market for some starting pitching help, even with Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga at the top. They have already been linked to Baltimore Orioles right-hander Corbin Burnes.
But Burnes isn't the only top starter that will be available in free agency. There will be plenty of other options, including left-hander Blake Snell, who won the National League Cy Young Award last year. Perhaps he could be a fit for the Cubs.
"Snell turns 32 in December, so this offseason might be his last chance at a significant multi-year contract," Mike Axisa wrote. "As long as he stays healthy, Snell declines the player option and leaves the Giants to sign a multi-year contract with another team."
If the Cubs were to land Snell, they would be adding a true ace for the top of their rotation. Snell and Imanaga would make the Cubs a very difficult opponent to face.
The veteran left-hander has great postseason experience that could benefit the Cubs as they try to bounce back into contention in 2025. Despite their late surge, a trip to the postseason this year is unlikely for the North Siders.
But adding Snell for 2025 and beyond would give the Cubs their ace in the hole and somebody that can be trusted to start big games. Chicago could also easily give the Milwaukee Brewers a run for their money in the NL Central.
We'll see if Snell is on the Cubs radar.
