The Chicago Cubs need to close the gap between them and the Milwaukee Brewers to win the National League Central. The Cubs, unlike the Brewers, will be willing to spend this winter.
When listing teams Pete Alonso might prefer over the New York Mets in free agency, FanSided's Zach Pressnell named the Cubs.
"With Alonso set to enter free agency, the Cubs are going to practically offer him a blank check to try to get him to Wrigley Field in 2025," wrote Pressnell. "Money is what is going to drive Alonso in free agency and I'm not sure if anybody is going to be able to outbid the Cubs, especially if the Mets get caught up chasing Soto."
Alonso turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension in June 2023, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman. Spotrac predicts Alonso to sign a six-year, $174 million deal in free agency.
"Craig Counsell and company are ready to win and they're ready to win now. This feeling was only intensified after their disappointing finish to the 2024 season that saw them miss the postseason," wrote Pressnell. "Counsell isn't used to losing and it's not something that he would be okay with doing again next season."
Alonso was named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career this season, setting himself up for a big payday.
