The Boston Red Sox welcomed the Philadelphia Phillies to Fenway Park for the first of three games, and they were handed a 4-1 loss to the NL East team.

Boston's defense continued to be an issue, as first baseman Dominic Smith dropped a throw from second baseman Enmanuel Valdez that would've ended the inning but instead allowed two runners to score.

Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford looked much better in this start, with his only two earned runs allowed coming off of solo home runs from former Red Sox first baseman and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. In total, he allowed just six hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings.

Manager Alex Cora went to Greg Weissert, Cam Booser and Chase Anderson for the remaining three innings. The trio combined for three scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed.

Boston's offense didn't offer much, as they recorded just four total hits and one walk. Their lone run came on a sacrifice fly to right field by Rob Refsnyder in the first inning which followed a Jarren Duran single and David Hamilton double. Hamilton is the only player in the game recording multiple hits, ripping a single in the ninth as well. As a team, the Red Sox didn't record a hit from the third inning through the eighth.

The loss brings Cora's team back to one game under .500 (33-34) and 14-19 at Fenway Park. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night for the middle game of the series.
