Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow will need to be busy this offseason looking for ways to upgrade the roster heading into 2025 to give manager Alex Cora and his team a chance to compete for a postseason run.
The roster wasn't good enough in 2024, and there are some clear spots where Boston could use some help.
One area of need for the Red Sox could be a right-handed infield bat because even though there seems to be a lot of talent on the MLB roster and even more coming, the team may package some prospects and/or current starters to acquire the top-end pitching that they severely lack.
Boston's answer could be to sign Willy Adames, who has been connected to the team for a while now.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal floated the idea of Boston trading Triston Casas, moving Rafael Devers to first base and signing Willy Adames and that concept has gained a lot of traction.
On Tuesday, MassLive's Chris Cotillo wrote that he believes the idea may be too bold of a move for the team to make now, but he did not that "there are some in the organization who value Adames highly and would love to see him in Boston."
Adames, 29, appeared in 161 games for Milwaukee this year, hitting .251 with a .794 OPS, 32 home runs,1 12 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. He's played mostly shortstop in his career, but he does have some experience at second base.
If a prospect like Marcelo Mayer or Kristian Campbell (who are Boston's No. 2 and 3 prospects via. SoxPropsects), Adames could slide in at second base at least until the other is ready. Then, if the other arrives, they or Adames could move elsewhere.
It seems more likely that someone in the outfield (Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela or Roman Anthony) would move before one of the infielders, but Boston's interested in the Milwaukee stud is worth monitoring.
