The Boston Red Sox made a trade over the weekend to acquire first baseman and outfielder Garrett Cooper from the Chicago Cubs to help fill the void left by Triston Casas recovering from an injury.

To make room for him on the roster, the Red Sox announced on Monday that they've designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment.

Reyes, 30, was traded to Boston from the Oakland Athletics last year for cash considerations. In 85 games for the Red Sox over these two seasons, he's hit .260 with two home runs, 25 RBIs and a .647 OPS.

Reyes was also used as a pitcher during Saturday's blowout win over Chicago, allowing just one hit and one walk in his scoreless inning of work, lowering his career ERA down to 2.25 in four appearances.

With Cooper likely being the team's main first baseman, Rafael Devers back at third base after his injury and Bobby Dalbec being able to play both, there wasn't a huge need for Reyes on the roster at this point. However, if he passes through waivers, he could be back at some point if needed.
