In November 2015, the Boston Red Sox sent a package of Manuel Margot, Javy Guerra, Carlos Asuaje and Logan Allen to the San Diego Padres for veteran Craig Kimbrel.
Kimbrel ended up spending three seasons in Boston, making three All-Star teams and helping them win the 2018 World Series. He appeared in 187 games and posted a 2.44 ERA and a 0.906 WHIP while striking out 14.9 batters per nine innings.
Since then, Kimbrel has bounced around, spending time with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies before landing with the Baltimore Orioles this season. However, Kimbrel's time in Baltimore may be coming to a close, as the team announced that they've designated the 36-year-old for assignment.
In 2024, Kimbrel has pitched in 57 games thus far, posting a 5.33 ERA and a 1.357 WHIP while striking out 12.6 batters per nine innings.
If he goes unclaimed, Kimbrel could accept an assignment with Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate, but with only five games left in Norfolk's season, he may just sit out the rest of the year.
This may be the end of Kimbrel's Hall of Fame career, but we'll always have the memories of his great years with the Red Sox.
