In the seventh inning of the Boston Red Sox's 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park, benches cleared after Red Sox reliever Chris Martin recorded the final out.
There were a few angry participants, including Martin and Brewers first base coach (and former Red Sox player) Quintin Berry.
While it was unclear what happened in the moment, Martin gave some explanation after the game went final.
“I probably said some things under my breath that were directed towards that inning,” Martin said (via MassLive). “I’ll let y’all determine what them things were. Heat of the moment. They bunted twice... I didn’t like it. I know it’s part of the game but it is what it is. I let them know.
“I feel like, in this league, swing the bat. That’s it. Honestly, it’s probably a compliment. Maybe they don’t think they can get a hit or whatever.”
The only hit Martin gave up in that inning was a bunt single, as the other three batters ground out, including one on a sacrifice bunt.
Boston did nothing in the bottom of the inning, but they took the lead in the eighth and secured the win in the ninth.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora seemed to have Martin's back in the situation and put some blame on Berry.
“I think Q (Berry) took exception to something Marty said,” said Cora. “I don’t know. Players are the players. Our job is to avoid stuff like that as coaches.”
