The Boston Red Sox lost their fifth game in a row on Wednesday night, as they fell to the New York Mets 8-3 at Citi Field to end their horrendous road trip with a 1-5 record.
With this loss, Boston is now 5.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League with just 22 games remaining in their campaign. And, now, they're tied with the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners in the hunt, so they'll also need those teams to stumble over the final few weeks to have a chance.
However, after Wednesday's loss, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was asked about the teams ahead of them, he had a blunt response.
“We’re playing .500 baseball. Talking about the Royals and Twins doesn’t matter," Cora said (via. Tyler Milliken).
Throughout the post-game press availability, he kept mentioning how the team looks average right now, and their record shows that.
Boston's hot stretch before the All-Star break seems so distant now, as they've gone from 10 games over .500 to back to even in just over a month.
At this point, it doesn't feel possible for the Red Sox to sneak their way into the postseason. Technically, there's time, but so much would have to go right when so little has recently.
