The Boston Red Sox haven't exactly been the best team in baseball in recent years, finishing last in the AL East in 2022 and 2023 after surprisingly making it to the ALCS in 2021.
Part of the issue was Boston's mishandling of the roster in recent seasons, something that's still going on today. There's a clear and obvious change in the Red Sox's philosophy which has resulted in less spending, and fans aren't the only ones who are seeing it and have been impacted by it.
Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo took a shot at Boston's front office for their handling of the roster ahead of his return to Fenway Park for the first time since being traded to the New York Yankees.
“We didn’t have the pieces that we needed," Verdugo said (via. MassLive). "To not get them at the trade deadlines was tough... It would have been nice to see a little bit more initiative when I was there, just to try to force winning.”
While some will be upset with Verdugo's statement because he's a former Red Sox and current Yankee, he's not wrong. Boston should've done more to help the roster, and that wasn't necessarily Chaim Bloom's fault then or Craig Breslow's fault now. It all stems from the top of the chain.
