A Premier League title win is “absolutely necessary” for Pep Guardiola to keep his job at Manchester City, says Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher.

The Catalan coach arrived at the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2016 having forged a reputation as one of the finest managers in world football during stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

He was, however, to find the going tough in England and endured a first season without major silverware.

Gallagher feels further failure would leave the club with no choice but to make another change in the dugout, with Guardiola under pressure to deliver domestic and European success.

He told French football magazine So Foot: "It is absolutely necessary to win the title next season, we cannot leave it to Chelsea again.

"If we don't win anything then he won't be able to stay.”

Gallagher added, with City having finished above arch-rivals Manchester United once again last season: "We have gone beyond that stage. We have to win the title and we must do well in the Champions League.”

Guardiola has also been accused of hampering his cause by allowing the likes of Joe Hart to move on, with the England international given few opportunities in 2016-17 before being loaned out to Torino.

"Pep made a mistake in getting rid of Joe Hart so soon. He shot himself in the foot," Gallagher said.

"He should have kept him for another season, especially with [Vincent] Kompany's injury. Without them two, there was a lack of leadership in defence."

City have already started to rebuild ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, with big-money deals done for Portugal international midfielder Bernardo Silva and Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson.

There is also the promise of more to come, with Guardiola seeking to bolster his ranks in just about every area of the field.
