When met by the press after the 2018 AFF Cup draw event that was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, Malaysia head coach Tan Cheng Hoe said that his side are the underdogs in their group.

The Harimau Malaya were drawn in Group A; alongside Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

He added that as he has only been appointed the national team head coach fairly recently, he will use the tournament to gauge his men's performance.

"As a new head coach, it takes time for me to develop the players. At the same time, I want them to play for the country, and to gain confidence and support by winning matches, especially as this (the tournament) is the highlight of the Malaysian football calendar.

"We are the underdogs of Group A and also the tournament. We'll take it one match at a time and hopefully, win a match or two," said the former Kedah head coach.

Tan, formerly assistant head coach to Nelo Vingada, was promoted to the top job in December last year after the Portuguese resigned. Under him, Malaysia have recorded one win, one draw and one defeat.
