Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to his former Liverpool team-mate Xabi Alonso following the Bayern Munich midfielder's announcement that he will retire this summer.

The 35-year-old enjoyed a five-season stint alongside Gerrard at Anfield, before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009, and was part of the 2004-05 Reds team which won the Champions League.
Gerrard, who also retired from professional football in November 2016, was quick to take to social media to congratulate the Spaniard on his illustrious career.
"Xavi you are pure quality," Gerrard posted on Instagram. "A class act on the pitch and a gentlemen off it.

"It was a pleasure to play alongside you and I missed you every day from the moment you left the reds.
"Congratulations on your perfect career and good luck to you and your family In the future. #legend"

Alonso also won the FA Cup, the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup while at Liverpool with Gerrard.
