Gareth Bale's opener in Real Madrid's 3-2 victory Sunday over Villarreal put Los Blancos among the ranks of La Liga greatness, matching a historic record previously set by Barcelona.

The Welshman's 64th-minute strike, which was followed by a Cristiano Ronaldo goal from the spot and an Alvaro Morata tally, marked the 44th consecutive match in which Real Madrid have scored. That ties the longest streak in Liga history, with the 1944 Barcelona side the last team to run off such an impressive scoring run.

The last time Real Madrid failed to score in a contest was a scoreless draw in April 2016 against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. Since then, the team has lost just three times in official competition and scored at least once in all three of those contests.

Jury still out on Barca's formation switch

Zinedine Zidane's men have a chance to break the 73-year-old mark with a goal in their next encounter, hosting Las Palmas in league action Wednesday.
