Indy 500 results: Who won the 2019 Indianapolis 500? Final order, highlights from the race image

Pole sitter Simon Pagenaud put together a dominant performance to win his first career Indy 500. He led for a total of 116 laps from start to finish.

Pagenaud held off a pesky Alexander Rossi in the final laps, preventing the driver from passing him on the final turns. 2017 champion Takuma Sato also threatened to take the checkered flag towards the end but fell just short.

Rossi, who was driving like a man on a mission throughout the race, suffered a pair of tough setbacks. He was blocked by Helio Castroneves, who was out of contention, on behalf of Pagenaud. Not long later, he incurred a problem with the fuel probe of his car, which delayed his pitstop.

Rookie Colton Herta, seen as one of the favorites entering the race, encountered early engine problems and finished just three laps.

Defending champion Will Power was taken out of it early after suffering a pit penalty, but rebounded to finish in the top five.

Pagenaud makes it back-to-back Indy 500 victories for Team Penske and its third win since 2015.

3:28 p.m.: Don't expect fuel to be a problem for the remainder of the race. Drivers are getting that taken care of during the break.

3:11 p.m.: Meanwhile, Rossi makes his move and passes Pagenaud.

3:10 p.m.: Huge crash on lap 178! Bourdais, Graham Rahal and Felix Rosenqvist are among the drivers involved.

3:09 p.m.: Pagenaud, Rossi and Carpenter are all right behind each other.

3:07 p.m.: Leaders pit for potentially the final time. No issues from any of them at the pitstop.

3:03 p.m.: Looks like the rain — which once seemed like a guarantee — won't be a factor during the rest of the race.

3:01 p.m.: Rossi is a man on a mission. He passes Daly for fourth place.

2:57 p.m.: A look at the leaderboard.

2:54 p.m.: More woes for Rossi.

2:52 p.m.: Championship leader Josef Newgarden has passed Pagenaud for the lead.

2:40 p.m.: Further clarification on the Rossi debacle.

2:37 p.m.: 60 laps to go. Dixon is in the lead as we approach the home stretch. Rossi's set back may clear the way for Pagenaud.

2:35 p.m.: Very rough sequence for Rossi. He is enraged at Castroneves for holding him up, then his pit team can't plug the fuel in.

2:32 p.m.: Pagenaud's strategy to finish the race.

2:29 p.m.: Pagenaud pits on lap 129, giving Rossi the lead. We will see how the fuel holds up for both during the latter portion of the race.

2:17 p.m.: Rossi is right on Pagenaud's tail and is threatening to pass.

2:01 p.m.: Through 90 laps, it's the dominant Pagenaud and Carpenter maintaining their top two positions. Power's penalty may have put him out of the running.

1:52 p.m.: Defending champion Power will get a penalty after hitting a pit crew member. He will go to the back of the pack.

1:44 p.m.: Potential roadblock for Power after his poor stop at the pitstop.

1:35 p.m.: The top five remains pretty stable through 60 laps.

1:32 p.m.: Penalty for Helio Castroneves. That won't help his case for the improbable win.

1:21 p.m.: James Davison, who started strong, is having trouble on pit road.

1:10 p.m.: No rain is imminent at the track.

12:51 p.m.: Through three laps, pole sitter Pagenaud maintains the lead.

12:49 p.m.: The green flag has been raised and we are underway.

12:35 p.m.: As the green flag approaches, the weather in Indianapolis is a question mark, with rain a distinct possibility.

12:20 p.m.: What a story it would be if Marco Andretti could pull out the victory.

12:09 p.m.: We're inching closer to race time.
