ISL 2017: Rene Meulensteen - Goals scored in ISL are all from silly mistakes, not good football image

Kerala Blasters’ Rene Meulensteen made a remark stating that mistakes made in the game against FC Goa typify the Indian Super League (ISL). It must be noted that the match ended 5-2 in favour of Goa but there were school-boy errors made by both sets of players.

Meulensteen was asked to explain his opinion on the above mentioned statement to which he clarified that it was an observation as opposed to a stinging criticism of the league.

“It's not a criticism. It's an observation and it is normal because it is a young and emerging league where young Indian players are playing with foreign players who have played at a high level.
So, they have to learn a lot.

“Because of that, sometimes the emotions or excitement or the environment it creates, creates those mistakes. It doesn’t happen on purpose. If you look at the ISL goals, the goals come from mistakes rather than really good football from back to front.

“Over time, this will get better. It is part of a learning curve. Indian players will get better and only then you can make the step forward. It is not a problem. It is merely an observation. That's what I see.

“We've had this against FC Goa. I would have expected one or two mistakes but not four or five. Hopefully, all our mistakes are done with and we won't commit more,” said the former Manchester United assistant coach.
