Chinese Taipei went down 5-0 as hosts India got off to a winning start in the 2018 Intercontinental Cup in the opener played at the Mumbai Football Arena in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on Friday evening.

The visitors have brought a youthful side to compete in the four-nation tournament and the head coach of the losing side, Gary White, instead of pondering on the scoreline, has looked at the aspect to his team's development.

"I think everything went right for us in terms of future as six U-23 players and two U-18 players played tonight. The tournament is about development and experience for us as we couldn't bring the first team here," he told reporters after their defeat.

"Our players have to learn; they'll take a lot from this. We shall try to fix things as early as possible. Unless you try, you don't know," he added.

Just as the Indian football team is preparing for the 2019 AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Asian Cup to be held in UAE in 2019, Chinese Taipei are also readying themselves for their respective tournaments.

"The next project for these kids is the U-19 Asian Cup and U-23 Asian Games and the others will be considered for the senior side," White revealed.

India skipper Sunil Chhetri scored a hat-trick, coupled by a strike each by Udanta Singh and Pronay Halder in the 5-0 tally and the Chinese Taipei chose Chhetri as an apt example for his youngsters.

"Sunil Chhetri is brilliant (example) for my youngsters to show how senior players are like. They will use the experience. The players will see what they have to do. Our youngsters will look upto him one day," the Englishman signed off.

Chinese Taipei have a three-day break before taking on New Zealand on June 5.
