Seize the Grey went wire to wire to win the Preakness Stakes. For a part of Saturday, it looked like the horse might pull off the feat again.
Seize the Grey got off to a hot start in the Belmont Stakes, leading at the first and second turns of the race. By turn three, Dornoch, at 17-1 odds, had caught up to the previous winner. The two battled it out until the final turn, when Dornoch started to take the edge.
But it wasn't over there. From the back of the field, Mindframe began to race past horses on the outside and started to gain on the lead. Dornoch would not give in, however, holding on to win the 2024 Belmont Stakes and give jockey Luis Saez his second victory in the third leg of the Triple Crown.
This year's race had a different feeling to it. The race was held at Saratoga Springs, a change from the usual home of Belmont Park, which was under construction. It still didn't stop racing fans from piling into one of the oldest sports venues in the United States.
Dornoch delivered on some long-shot odds to win the Belmont Stakes. At 17-1, Dornoch was the biggest underdog to win the race since Ruler on Ice, which was at 24-1 to win the Belmont Stakes in 2011.
There wound up being three different Triple Crown winners in 2024. Mystik Dan won the Kentucky Derby, Seize the Grey won Preakness, and Dornoch won the Belmont Stakes.
