Belmont Stakes 2024: Favorites

The clear favorites in the 2024 Belmont Stakes field are Sierra Leone (9-5), Mindframe (7-2), Mystik Dan (5-1), and Seize the Grey (8-1).

Sierra Leone's odds imply about a 36-percent winning probability. while Mindframe's odds shake out to 22 percent. Both have impressive records, with Sierra Leone racking up three wins and two runner-ups in five races and Mindframe winning each of his first two starts.

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan's +500 odds translate to a 16.7-percent implied win probability, while Preakness champion Seize the Grey's +800 represent an 11.1-percent chance of winning.

Sierra Leone (9-5)

Considering Sierra Leone came so close to winning the soggy Kentucky Derby — and he has plenty of experience winning in wet and muddy conditions — he seems like a fitting favorite in Saratoga this weekend.

Future Hall-of-Fame trainer and Saratoga native Chad Brown knows this track well and has accumulated a record amount of Belmont training titles. Brown recently made the switch from jockey Tyler Gaffalione to Flavien Prat, which should fare well for Sierra Leone.

A Belmont win feels like this horse's destiny, and the odds suggest that sportsbooks feel the same way. Don't leave Sierra Leone off too many exacta and trifecta tickets.

Mindframe (7-2)

Legendary trainer Todd Pletcher has four wins and eight seconds in his Belmont career, and Mindframe could easily add to his legacy at Saratoga this weekend. A blazing-fast colt riding under renowned jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., he will be a popular selection going into the weekend.

In Mindframe's seven-furlong maiden at Gulfstream Park, he won by 13 3/4 lengths and earned a fantastic 113 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest figure recorded by any of the horses in the Belmont field. He then won at Churchill Downs in early May, so his track record is short but promising.

Mystik Dan (5-1)

Mystik Dan won the Kentucky Derby and finished second at the Preakness, and there's no reason to expect this impressive colt to finish anywhere lower than top three this weekend in Saratoga.

Mystik Dan has great speed figures, fantastic stamina, and proven success in wet conditions. He also has a favorable post position at No. 3, which has produced 16 Belmont Stakes winners.

Seize the Grey (8-1)

Seize the Grey broke his maiden at Saratoga, and his trainer Wayne Lucas has won the Belmont four times. After winning the Pat Day Mile on Kentucky Derby day and then emerging victorious at the Preakness by 2.25 lengths, this colt has quickly become a fan favorite.

Seize the Grey has been very busy lately, running three races in five weeks. But fatigue hasn't been a factor, as this horse just continues to show spectacular form. With great pedigree, awesome speed, and underrated stamina, Seize the Grey yields solid value at 8-1. He's racing out of the first post, which has produced a record 24 Belmont wins.

What is the best pole position at the Belmont?

Although it's important to note that the Belmont will be held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY — not its usual venue at Belmont Park, due to a renovation break — it's still worth noting the past post position success rates for the race and for racing in general.

The optimal position in horse racing is dependent on a lot of factors, including the horse, the track, the jockey, the terrain, the weather, and the competition.

Strategies also vary based on the position. Every position from 1-13 has won at least one race at the Belmont Stakes. That said, the No. 1 post has come away with the most wins in history at 24 — great news for Preakness winner Seize the Day.

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and his team should be happy, too, as the No. 3 post has won 16 times including last year's race. The No. 1 post last won in 2018.

Belmont Stakes winners by post position

Throughout history, 13 different gates have earned at least one victory at the Belmont Stakes since the race began using starting posts in 1904. This year's event features just 10 gates, as it will be held at Saratoga as opposed to the temporarily closed Belmont Park (under construction).

Over the past 118 runnings of the Belmont Stakes, Gate 1 has the most winners (24) and last won in 2018. Gate 3 has produced 16 winners, including 2023 champion Arcangelo.
