Wells Fargo Championship 2019: Jason Dufner rises to first; Rory McIlroy drops to fourth image

Jason Dufner had a great day in Round 2 at the Wells Fargo Championship, surging past Rory McIlroy with one of the best performances of the day.

Dufner, 42, has five PGA Tour wins. He shot a 63 and sank an impressive putt from 40 feet out during his impressive showing while moving into sole possession of the lead at 11 under on the tournament.

Dufner has missed more weekends than he's played this season, and is interested to see what he can do heading into the weekend.

"See how it goes being in the heat of it on Saturday and Sunday," Dufner said. "I've been there before. It's been a while, but I kind of know what to expect. It will be a good challenge to see where I'm at, what I'm doing."

Joel Dahmen sits in sole second at 10 under.

McIlroy, a two-time Wells Fargo Championship winner, has played quite well at Quail Hollow Club in the past. The Round 1 leader followed up his 66 from Thursday a 1-under 70 on Friday.

McIlroy is still in the hunt, as he sits in a tie for fourth place at 6 under. He had to tough through some adversity, as he finished up his round with a double-bogey at No. 8 and a bogey at No. 9.

Nevertheless, he could be poised to bounce back in his next outing.

Patrick Reed joins Dufner, Dahmen, McIlroy and Homa in the field's top five so far. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson missed the cut after shooting 5 over for the tournament.
