U.S. Open Round 3 results: Will Zalatoris, Matt Fitzpatrick share lead after overcoming rough conditions image

The course at The Country Club emerged as the biggest victor on moving day of the 2022 U.S. Open.

Only seven golfers scored under par and only 10 had as good a score as even. Collin Morikawa, the 36-hole co-leader, endured a horrific 7-over round that put him at 2 over for the tournament and likely took him out of contention.

U.S. Open live updates, highlights from Saturday's Round 3

(All times Eastern)

8:08 p.m.: That'll do it for moving day. Round 4 figures to be wild.

7:53 p.m.: And that's exactly how it ends for Rahm: a double bogey to fall to 3 under. Silver lining, that's just one shot off the lead heading into Round 4.

7:51 p.m.: From disaster to calamity. Rahm goes from one bunker to the next, needing a miracle to save par. Best-case scenario is an up-and-down bogey. More than likely looking at a double bogey to end the day.

7:50 p.m.: Disaster for Rahm, whose shot on the ball hits the face of that steep-facing incline. He'll need an up-and-down just to save par.

7:49 p.m.: Rahm's plans have taken a slight detour into the bunker. That's going to be a nervous finish, but par is still on the table.

7:37 p.m.: Rahm takes the outright lead on Hole 17. Setting himself up to take at least a one-stroke lead into the final round.

7:04 p.m.: Fitzpatrick bogeys on his last hole to lose the outright lead. He and Zalatoris should be the last to tee off in Round 4.

6:49 p.m.: And Fitzpatrick sinks it from 6 feet out, his third birdie in the last four holes. He's the outright leader at 5 under and tied for the lowest score this round (3 under).

6:47 p.m.: Fitzpatrick has set himself up to take the outright lead on Hole 17. Would be a massive get.

6:33 p.m.: And there's a bogey for Morikawa, who started the day with a tie for first at 5 under. He's 4 over for the round.

6:31 p.m.: Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick is now tied for first with Zalatoris after birdies on 14 and 15.

6:30 p.m.: Scheffler's shellshocked. That's his third straight bogey (following a double on 11). That's five strokes lost, and he's now 1 under.

6:04 p.m.: And now here comes Matt Fitzpatrick with a walk-in birdie on Hole 14 to get to e under and a shot of Zalatoris.

6 p.m.: Hell of a bunker shot from Zalatoris, especially with that incline. He has a 4-footer to save par.

5:59 p.m.: Keegan Bradley making things interesting as well.

5:55 p.m.: Great time for a birdie from McIlroy, who is now two shots off the lead with nearly the entire back nine still left to play.

5:57 p.m.: Zalatoris' shot from the grandstands is met with raucous applause, until it hits the bunker. He'll have that for an up-and-down par to maintain the lead.

5:50 p.m.: Zalatoris' tee on 18 is in the grandstands.

5:45 p.m.: Scheffler loses another stroke on Hole 12 after barely saving par from the fringe. That's a double bogey and bogey on consecutive holes and he's tied for second at 3 under.

5:30 p.m.: Scheffler's bogey attempt just misses the hole pin-high. That's a double bogey to move him into a tie for the lead at 4 under.

5:28 p.m.: And now Scheffler has to chip in from the rough for par ... his attempt rolls roughly 15 feet past its mark.

5:25 p.m.: Rahm, somehow, loses only one stroke after his disastrous tree shot. Thank goodness for par-5 holes.

5:20 p.m.: Scheffler manages to save par on 10 after wedging out of the bunker.

5:17 p.m.: Chaos at the top of the leaderboard. Morikawa double-bogeys to fall two under; Scheffler is in the bunker; and Rahm's ball is nestled comfortably among some tree roots. Pic related:

5:05 p.m.: Rahm hits his first birdie of the day on Hole 7, getting back to even for the round and tied for second at 4 under.

5:03 p.m.: Scheffler is on one, darn near hitting another eagle on Hole 9 but settling instead for the tap-in birdie.

4:50 p.m.: Morikawa gets one back on Hole 5 to hold second place at 5 under.

4:43 p.m.: SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER WITH THE DOWNTOWN EAGLE FOR THE OUTRIGHT LEAD!

4:41 p.m.: Morikawa needs to get things under control. His tee off Hole 5 goes far right and hits the tall grass on the ridge.

4:38 p.m.: There is now a four-way tie for the lead after Patrick Rodgers chips out of the fringe for an incredible eagle on Hole 8.

4:35 p.m.: Morikawa centers it! Incredible save keeps Morikawa atop the leaderboard even with the lost stroke.

4:33 p.m.: Morikawa is having a rough go on Hole 4. He just chipped out of the fringe for a par attempt and will have a 15-foot look for bogey. He stands to lose the outright lead.

4:24 p.m.: Wise's tee on Hole 4 hits the front-left bunker. Could be problematic if he can't scramble for the up-and-down par.

4:21 p.m.: Morikawa has been forced into relatively easy pars after barely missing birdie attempts each of the last two holes. He remains atop the leaderboard, but will those near misses come back to bite him?

4:15 p.m.: Aaron Wise hits an 8-footer for birdie to take over the co-lead alongside Morikawa.

3:59 p.m.: Morikawa has a walk-in for par on Hole 1, while Buckley bogeys on his Round opener. Morikawa has the outright lead at 5 under.

3:49 p.m.: Will Zalatoris with an impressive birdie on Hole 9 to get to 3 under for the tournament. He has four birdies and a bogey through the front nine.

3:45 p.m.: The late groups are having some issues with the early holes. McIlroy's par save attempt stopped on the lip of the hole on 2, while Buckley's looking at a bogey on his first hole.

3:44 p.m.: That's Scheffler's second birdie in three holes to get back to 4 under.

3:37 p.m.: Sam Burns inching closer toward the top of the leaderboard.

3:36 p.m.: Rahm and Buckley are on the course as the penultimate grouping.

3:25 p.m.: Scheffler loses his stroke on the next hole, bogeying to fall back to 3 under.

3:18 p.m.: Not a great start for Beau Hossler, whose first shot hits the thick stuff and whose second hits the bunker. He'll need to scramble to save par and remain a shot off the lead.

3:17 p.m.: Sam Burns hits a 20-foot birdie on Hole 3 to get to 3 under. Very impressive for the 25-year-old.

3:12 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler wastes no time, hitting a 12-foot birdie on Hole 1 to get to 4 under and one shot off the lead.

2:55 p.m.: A tap-in eagle is a great way to get back to even for Seamus Power.

2:33 p.m.: Zalatoris sinks another birdie putt to go 2 under on the day. It's shaping up to be a strong day for him as he continues to gain ground on the leaderboard.

2:29 p.m.: What a chip by Max Homa on the Par 5 for the Eagle. Pinged his way into the cup.

2:24 p.m.: Jordan Spieth sinks a 23-foot birdie putt down the hill. Terrific shot to bring him even on the day and 2 over for the tournament.

2:17 p.m. Keegan Bradley comes up just short on a long putt for par. Had the ball teetering on the cup but couldn't quite get it to fall, has to settle for bogey.

2:02 p.m.: Will Zalatoris birdies on Hole 2 and finds himself three back from Morikawa and Dahmen.

1:48 p.m.: Thomas ends up bogeying the hole after his third shot barely misses the green. He got a decent look from about 20 feet away but missed it by about a foot. He's 2 over.

1:43 p.m.: Justin Thomas is vocally angry after the USGA declines to give him a drop ball after his ball lands next to a grate. His shot on Hole 4 lands in a bunker 50 yards from the green.

12:56 p.m.: Min Woo Lee with the chip-in birdie. Very nice.

12:52 pm.: Dustin Johnson gets a 12-foot birdie on his first hole of the day to get back to even; meanwhile, DeChambeau has bogeyed three of four holes after his initial birdie to fall to 4 over.

12:25 p.m.: Jordan Spieth (2 over) with the nice bunker shot to help him get one back on Hole 5 .

12:11 p.m.: Bryson DeChambeau's going to need a lot more of these if he wants to contend for a championship.
