A double bogey on the first hole could have been cataclysmic for Tiger Woods’ first round at the WGC-Mexico, but he was able to avoid total disaster Thursday, although it wasn’t always pretty.
Woods, who has won a record 18 World Golf Championships in his career, finished at even-par 71 for the round, with a run of three consecutive birdies from the fourth through the sixth holes helping his case. His success stalled, however, and he didn't get another birdie until the 15th hole, which turned out to be his final birdie of the round.

He wound up bogeying two other holes in addition to his double bogey to start the round, in part because of missed 3- and 4-foot putts.
Although there is no cut Friday, Woods still faces an uphill climb. Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas are all near the top of the leaderboard, and all are at least five strokes ahead of Woods.
Sporting News provided live scoring updates and highlights from Woods' first round Thursday at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Naucalpan, Mexico.

Hole 18: Par 4, 381 yards
Another green in regulation is followed by a 20-foot birdie putt that lands well short, forcing a par to finish Woods' round.
Hole 17: Par 3, 147 yards
Woods slightly outdrives the green and hits it into the rough, but saves par with a putt from 12 feet.
Hole 16: Par 4, 416 yards
Up-and-down for par for Woods to stay at even par for the round. His chip from the rough stops about 4 feet from the hole, setting up a very makeable putt.
Hole 15: Par 5, 570 yards
Much-needed birdie for Woods to get back to even par. He nearly makes the green in two and is able to two-putt.
Hole 14: Par 4, 502 yards
Rather routine par for Woods, whose long tee shot put him 172 yards from the hole. He reaches the green in regulation and two-putts.
Hole 13: Par 3, 207 yards
A tee shot to the back of the green followed by struggles with the putter, including a miss from only a couple of feet away, drops Woods back over par.
Hole 12: Par 4, 415 yards
Another par as a short approach shot forces a 37-foot birdie putt that just misses the hole.
Hole 11: Par 5, 627 yards
Tough pair of shots by Woods to open the hole. He hits it into the rough off the tee and then goes into the bunker. Nonetheless, he gets onto the green in three and pars. Failing to take advantage of par-5s may not bode well for him.
Hole 10: Par 4, 457 yards
A roughly 20-foot birdie putt falls short, and Woods settles for his second consecutive par. He has overcome his tough start, but he hasn't built on his trio of birdies from the fourth through sixth holes.
Hole 9: Par 4, 389 yards
Woods notches a par and makes the turn at even. He's eight strokes behind the leader, Rory McIlroy.
Hole 8: Par 4, 516 yards
Disappointing end to the hole: a couple of missed 3-footers wipes away a promising start and leaves Woods with a bogey.
Hole 7: Par 3, 240 yards
Woods' tee shot lands on the very back edge of the green. His birdie streak comes to an end when his putt goes just left. He stays at 1 under.
Hole 6: Par 5, 603 yards
Perfectly played par-5 from Woods that includes a layup in front of the water and an approach shot 7 feet from the pin. All of that leads to Woods' third straight birdie, which puts under par for the first time on the day.

Hole 5: Par 4, 452 yards
Woods sinks a 22-foot birdie putt after hitting an iron off the tee and fairway. His disastrous first hole has been wiped out, and he is now four shots off the lead.

Hole 4: Par 4, 495 yards
The ship is slowly being righted. Woods' beautiful second shot puts him 4 feet from the hole. He easily sinks the birdie putt.
Hole 3: Par 3, 200 yards
Two straight pars for Woods after his tee shot lands on the green but a 22-foot birdie putt falls just short.
Hole 2: Par 4, 383 yards
Another bad start for Woods. His tee shot barely stays on the fairway and his approach falls short of the green. His third shot is a long putt from the fairway that puts him about a foot from the hole, leading to a par save.
Hole 1: Par 4, 305 yards
It's a drivable downhill par-4 to start the round, but Woods' tee shot goes way left and out of bounds. He takes a penalty and rehits, but that shot veers left and in the rough, as well. The tough lie forces a shot into a bunker, but he prevents further damage by placing his sand shot right near the hole and tapping in for double bogey. Not an ideal start, to say the least.
