The first round of the 2022 PGA Championship is in the books, and as per usual, the field is tightly packed together.
Rory McIlroy, who is looking for his first major win since 2014 and third PGA Championship title overall, is at the head of the pack after shooting a 5-under-par 65 in the first round. He leads Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge (66) by one stroke.
Conditions at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., proved to be more favorable for those with the early tee times. The three leaders all came from the morning groups; 3 under (by Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover) was the best score for the afternoon portion of the competition.
In all, just 26 players carded under-par rounds on the first day, and some of the world's best players — including Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler — are flirting with the cut line as the tournament heads into Day 2.
Tiger Woods also has work to do to make the cut after shooting a 4-over 74 on Thursday.

PGA Championship cut rules
The top 70 players in the PGA Championship field (including ties) will advance to the third and fourth days of competition over the weekend.
The PGA Championship cut rules are a bit more forgiving than those on display at the Masters, where only the top 50 (including ties) advance. The Open Championship employs the same rules as the PGA Championship (top 70 plus ties). Meanwhile, the U.S. Open allows half of the field (including ties) to advance to the weekend.

How many golfers make the cut at the PGA Championship?
The PGA Championship began with a 156-player field in 2022. After Friday's action, the tournament will pare down to 70 participants (including ties) for the final two days. So, at least 70 players will make the cut, and in all likelihood there will be more.
