Open Championship 2022 Round 2 results: Cameron Smith leads the way as Tiger Woods says emotional farewell to St. Andrews image

Cameron Smith carded a flawless 64 to post a record half-way total on day two of the 150th Open Championship to give himself a two-shot lead heading into the weekend.

The talented Australian sits at 13 under par, beating the previous best held by Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and Louis Oosthuizen, and has Cameron Young (11 under), Rory McIlroy & Viktor Hovland (10 under) in hot pursuit of his lead.

Smith now has a great chance in equalling the lowest round in men's major history, Branden Grace's 62 at Royal Birkdale in 2017, when he aims to follow up on what's already been an impressive year by winning the 2022 Players Championship.

While the two Camerons battled it out for the lead, Tiger Woods stole the hearts of the British crowd once again as the golfing legend wiped away tears amid emotional scenes as he was cheered the full length of the 18th hole.

The former world No.1 knew full well he wasn't making the cut but lapped up the applause despite recording a three-over-par 75 for a nine-over total - and then declared he may have played his last Open at the famous St. Andrews course.

The 46-year-old admitted he hasn't played his last Open but said: "I came to understand what Jack [Nicklaus] and Arnold [Palmer] felt in the past and I felt that way. They understand what golf is all about and what it takes to be an Open champion.

"I have been lucky enough to win here twice - it felt emotional because I don't know whether I will be able to play when it comes back here."

The Sporting News was on hand to bring you live updates and highlights of Round 2 - check out how the action unfolded below.

9:10pm: A few words from McIlroy who goes into tomorrow's round third.

"I think it was good. It’s the first time we’ve seen the golf course in a different wind this week. It switched on us very early on," he said.

"I thought I adapted pretty well, played well coming in and stuck to my game plan well. I’m sort of walking off thinking I could have been a couple better but I’m in a great position going into the weekend. It’s nice to be in the mix."

9pm: Tony Finau needs to make a birdie on the 18th to make the cut... and he does! He'll have another two rounds of golf this weekend to look forward to.

8.45pm: Shane Lowry finishes off with back-to-back birdies to end on four-under overall and he moves into the top 25.

Hovland also closes out with a birdie to move to 10 under and he'll be paired with McIllroy tomorrow.

8.35pm: McIlroy finishes off on a four-under 68 for the day that leaves him in third and three off the lead.

Morikawa bows out on 71 and he looks gutted not to have made the cut.

Leaderboard update: -13: Smith (F), -11: Young (F), -10: McIlroy (F), -9: Johnson (F), Hovland (17) -8: Hatton (F), Scheffler (F), -7: Gooch (F), Scott (F), Theegala (F) Cantlay (F) ,

8.21pm: The course has not been kind to past winners today...

8:15pm: McIlroy sinks his fourth birdie of the back nine today! He's back to 10 under and the fans who've waited round on the 17th to see him absolutely love it!

8.09pm:  How about this for shot of the day then!? Hovland rockets to nine under with a beauty.

7.54pm: McIlroy makes par on the par-four 16th. Can he close the gap on the leader in the final two holes? The crowd are certainly cheering him on to with chants of "Rory, Rory, Rory!" as he makes his way to the 17th tee.

7.46pm: Defending champion Collin Morikawa is still at risk of not making the cut. He birdied the 14th to get back to +2 and has followed that up with a par. You feel he needs another two birdies in the final three holes to stand a chance though.

7.35pm: At 15, McIlroy is into the rough from a slightly off tee shot. He recovers well to get back into a decent position on the green and should be on course for par - but he comes up just short and right and has to settle for a bogey. He's back to four behind leader Smith.

Elsewhere, Lee Westwood notches a birdie at the 17th to get to five under.

7.21pm: McIlroy's run of birdies has come to an end and he's now hit back-to-back pars on the 13th and 14th.

7.13pm: The projected cut line is starting to become clearer and there's already been a host of big names miss out on the weekend action.

Notable players outside cut line: Tiger Woods (+9), Phil Mickelson (+5), Brooks Koepka (+4), Collin Morikawa (+2), Henrik Stenson (+1), Louis Oosthuizen (+1), Max Homa (+1)

7.07pm: Smith has been speaking to the media about his impressive opening two rounds and is asked how he'll spend this evening.

"I think just a little bit of dinner. Probably watch some shows and have a really good sleep in and then get on the bike in the morning and get ready for the day," he says.

7pm: Young ends on a birdie to finish on 69 and two off the leader. A brilliant performance today having led after the first round.

6.55pm: Stephen Dodd just holed a ridiculous putt at 16 from at least 30 feet. He'll defend his Senior Open title next week and it's also his 56th birthday today... he'll enjoy watching that shot back over a pint this evening.

6.50pm: Make that a third birdie in a row for McIlroy! He's level with Cameron Young on 10 under with the American heading onto his last hole of the day.

6.43pm: Tommy Fleetwood finishes with a round of 69 and three under. He's tied for 31st place after two rounds.

As for Schauffele, he's finally had to take a penalty shot after all those discussions.

6.35pm: Xander Schauffele is in the bushes... literally. He's searching for his ball in the prickly stuff and it doesn't look like much fun. He's found it though and is now chatting to an official in the bushes about his options with his current shot seemingly unplayable.

6.25pm: Smith cards an impressive 64 to lead the way on -13 as he rounds off an impressive day with a par. Big cheers for the Australian as he walks off the green.

6:21pm: Hovland makes a birdie on the tenth to move to eight under.

Meanwhile, world No.1 Scottie Scheffler has given his verdict after another round of 68.

"I got settled in though the loop and made some birdies. The pins make it hard to get close just because of how the slopes are, especially with holes 15 and 16.

"There are some you can get after and some you can't - just where some of the pins are."

6.18pm: Back-to-back birdies from McIlroy gets him to four off the lead!

Smith will face a nervous wait to see how close the three-time major winner can get to his lead in the back nine.

6.15pm: Wonder whether this little stat is on Smith's mind as he approaches the 18th...

6.11pm: McIlroy is back to eight under for the week and tied fourth with another birdie - although he came agonisingly close to an eagle, the ball just drifting to the right of the hole on the tenth.

Smith also recovered from his wayward tee shot to finish the 17th on par.

5.59pm: Leaderboard update: -13: Smith (16), -11: Young (14), -9: Johnson (F), -8: Hatton (F), Scheffler (F), -7: Gooch (F), Scott (F), Theegala (F) Cantlay (F) McIlroy (9), Hovland (8)

Smith hits another par on the 16th but then shanks one one into the rough from his tee shot on the 17th and could be in a spot of bother.

5.50pm: Young isn't going away though and his birdie at the 14th cuts the lead back down to two.

Elsewhere, McIlroy has bogeyed at the eighth after leaving himself too much work to do following a poor tee shot that went too far right. He's seven under.

5.41pm: Smith remains on eight under for the day with a straightforward par on the 15th.

5.34pm: John Rahm. who was playing behind Tiger Woods, give his thoughts on the standing ovation he received at the end of his round.

"I think yesterday not counting players, caddies or the people that have to be in the group (marshals) - we counted 86 people in the group. Basically media following. A big chaos, right? In our case being behind them we had to wait for these people to get out of our line of sight so definitely had to wait a little extra," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Yesterday was a waiting game for everybody but today it was really good to be on the tee at least while Tiger was waving goodbye - not that this is going to be his last one, but it was a really cool moment to see everybody around that area, the grandstand on 17 standing up and give a bit of an ovation to somebody that truly deserves it."

5.21pm: That is ridiculous! Smith just holed a putt from about 60ft for an eagle to extend his lead to three shots.

He salutes the crowd but after holing one like that you'd expect him to be doing cartwheels around the green. Alas no, he's focused on finishing this round as best he can. Four to play.

5.16pm: McIlroy holes a birdie on the seventh to move to -8 and three off the lead. He gets huge round of applause and looks very confident in his approach play right now.

5.03pm: Eagle alert! Justin Thomas hits a delightful second shot at the fifth and follows up with a neat putt to go back to one under. Shane Lowry and Viktor Hovland also make light work of the fifth as they settle for birdies after bold eagle attempts.

They've absolutely obliterated that hole between them.

Hovland -6, Lowry -1, Thomas -1 (5)

4.49pm: McIlroy is on the charge as he sinks a birdie putt at the fifth to go four adrift of the leader.

4.42pm: Young holes at birdie on the ninth to close the cap to one shot on leader Smith.

Leaderboard update: -11: Smith (12), -10: Young (10), -9: Johnson (F), -8: Hatton (F), Scheffler (F), -7: Gooch (F), Scott (F), Theegala (F) Cantlay (F)

4.30pm: Smith fails to make birdie on the 11th as he plays it cautiously once on the green.

Elsewhere, David Carey is through to the last two rounds after an impressive 67 today. He's on -5 overall and tied in 14th place.

4:21pm: The final round of players teeing off today - Alexander Bjork, Oliver Farr, and Matt Ford - are underway.

4.18pm: Smith -11 (10) is two shots clear now!

He looks unstoppable as he goes for a huge 90ft putt on the tenth which comes a few feet short, but he makes light work of the next from around 8ft out and he's all smiles right now.

Meanwhile, McIlroy has a chance for a birdie putt on hole four but leaves it just wide and has to settle for par. He's on six under, tied 10th.

4.07pm: There's still plenty of talk around Woods' latest comments and what it means for his future.

4.00pm: Sahith Theegala heads into the club house with a round of 69 - a one shot improvement on his 69 yesterday.

He keeps his nerve to pull off a tricky two-putt on 18 and as a 24-year-old rookie who only qualified for The Open last week he must be delighted with his performance so far.

3.48pm: Xander Schauffele is up and running with his first birdie of the day on the third hole. He joins a host of players on four under, tied in 20th place.

3.40pm: We have a new leader! Smith has moved into double digits under par (-10) and is now one ahead of Johnson and Young.

The Aussie has notched five birdies in his opening eight holes, a phenomenal start.

3.30pm: Leaderboard update: -9: Johnson (F), Smith (7), Young (7), -8: Hatton (F), Scheffler (F), Cantlay (16), -7: Gooch (F), Scott (F), Theegala (15)

3.25pm: Woods admits after making the clubhouse that this might have been his last Open at the Old Course, a place that clearly means a lot to him. "I made my share of mistakes," he said. "I struggled again today, I left a lot of putts short today, same as yesterday. Again, I never got anything going.

"It was very emotional for me. I've been coming here since 1995. The next one comes around in 2030 and I don't know if I'll be able to play again then. This might have been my last Open at St Andrews."

3.20pm! Smith is co-leader! What a round this is turning out to be for the Australian. He's carded four birdies and he's only at the eighth!

Meanwhile, McIlroy stays on six under at the first with an assertive putt. That was important for the Northern Irishman! He didn't want to be giving anything away early on.

3.15pm: That's it for Woods. He missed a birdie putt on the 18th and cards a round of 75. There's no denying that's disappointing for the three-time Open champion, but nothing fell for him today and yesterday. It doesn't diminish what a champion he is!

3.05pm: Woods down the fairway to the 18th green and everyone in the grandstands are on their feet to show their appreciation for a true great. This might well be the last time we see Woods at the Old Course. He looks quite emotional about it all!

2.55pm: Smith misses a birdie putt at the sixth, but he's still three under for the round and eight under for the tournament. Matt Fitzpatrick, however, has made back-to-back birdies at the 15th and 16th. The US Open champion is finishing strongly!

2.45pm: There's no getting around it - it's been a difficult tournament for Woods. Nothing has really happened for him and he's suffered from some bad luck too - he looked to have found the green with a chip at the 16th, but it rolled back into the bunker and he bogeyed.

2.35pm: Daly with the eagle! Magnificent putt from the 56-year-old at the fifth! He drained that one from distance and the crowd at the Old Course loved that! He's one under for the tournament. That might be enough to make the cut!

2.30pm: Sahith Theegala is enjoying himself on the short par fours. He made an eagle putt from 50 feet at the ninth and is three under for the round, six under for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth produced something special at the 14th. He settled a chip close to the hole and converted to move to five under on the leaderboard.

2.20pm: Adam Scott carded a round of 65 after birdying the last. He is seven under for the tournament and is well-placed ahead of the weekend.

2.10pm: Johnson is happy enough with his round today, and with good reason - he's the leader on nine under! "I felt like I’ve done a good job off the tee, getting into the right positions and putting it in the right position around the greens," he said.

"Probably be a few back by the end of the day, I would imagine. Still in a good spot going into the weekend."

1.55pm: Smith is feeling it! The Australian has bashed out three successive birdies to start his round today and that has pulled him level with Scheffler, Hatton and Young in the leaderboard. Just one behind Johnson!

1.40pm: Young tees off at the first. He has lost his place at the top of the leaderboard in the time since he was last on the course, but the rookie might actually be quite relieved that only one player (Johnson) has jumped above him! Gains happening everywhere you look!

1.30pm: Smith birdies the first! That's a real statement from Cameron Smith who is now six under and has a full second round ahead of him. The birdies are appearing all over the place, so there's a good chance that the Australian could make some real gains!

1.20pm: New leader! Johnson knocks in his birdie putt at the last and he is now the outright leader at the top of the leaderboard. A round of 67 for DJ! After producing a bogey on the first, he didn't drop another shot!

1.10pm: Johnson has the chance to claim an outright lead at the top of the leaderboard if he can produce a birdie at 18. His drive was slightly to the left, but he will still have the chance to putt from the 'Valley of Sin.'

12:50pm: Woods' chances of making the cut here are fading. A 37 round the front nine is respectable, but he really needs to be making some gains after a difficult opening round yesterday. Meanwhile, there are concerns over his fitness. He seems to be struggling, physically!

12.40pm: Johnson is co-leader! Young has company at the top of the leaderboard as Dustin Johnson sinks a birdie at 16. Assertive stroke from the American on the green. Johnson bogeyed the first hole, but has carded birdies at  3, 9, 10, 14 and 16! On a roll!

12:25pm: Poulter opens up with a birdie at the 1st! There were some boos for the Englishman as he started his round, just as there was yesterday, but he answers his critics with some very nice action on the green. Can he sustain that today?

12:20pm: Will Young still be at the top of the leaderboard by the time he tees off at 1.26pm? The course conditions are a bit more comfortable today, so it's entirely possible that one of the pack on seven under has set a new benchmark by that time. Rory McIlroy will start his second round just before 3pm (2.49pm) as well.

12.15pm: Leaderboard update: -8: Young (-), -7: Gooch (F), D Johnson (14), Scheffler (13), -6: SW Kim (F), Scott (14), Hatton (13), McIlroy (-)

12.05pm: Talor Gooch is in the clubhouse after finishing his round with a birdie - he did well to tackle the left-to-right at 18. That's enough to take the American up on to seven under with Scheffler. This came just after Scheffler missed the chance to join the lead - there just wasn't enough on his putt at the 13th!

11.50am: Scheffler on the charge! The world number one is making his presence felt on the leaderboard this morning! He's posted three birdies in succession to get himself to the 12th. Scheffler is now seven under, just one behind Cameron Young. Meanwhile, Talor Gooch has dropped back one after a bogey at the 16th.

11.45am: There was some rain overnight and early this morning in St Andrews and that has made the course a little softer. There's a bit more bounce. It was so hard and fast for the opening round yesterday, at least in the early and middle part of the day. It was playing like glass!

11.40am: Harrington is dropping back! He started with back-to-back birdies, but has now posted a bogey, bogey, double bogey and that has dropped him back. Harrington was up there in the five under pack, but the top of the leaderboard is starting to disappear out of sight for him.

11.30am: Now Woods is on his knees after narrowly missing out on a birdie. At six over with a projected par cut, his chances of an extended run look increasingly faint.

Neither Spieth nor Rahm look best pleased with their efforts, either. Spieth posts two under, Rahm one under.

11.15am: Talor Gooch has just sunk a birdie on the par-five 14th to move to seven under, putting him a shot behind leader Cameron Young. Not bad for his second Open appearance.

Woods is irked again, and with more reason this time: he's missed a straightforward par shot and is now six over.

11am: Woods hits a welcome birdie to move to five over, then shows his frustration by thudding his club into the turf after a slightly underwhelming approach shot on the fourth.

Whether that's a show of wider frustration at his fortunes so far or characteristic stratospheric standards, you sense that the three-time champion is hellbent on making the cut.

10:45am: Spieth moves to two under - a shot ahead of Rahm - after an accurate approach leaves him with a simple finish on the second.

Rahm has successive birdies, and Matt Fitzpatrick claims his first of the day. Woods makes par after an awry putt for a birdie. His hopes remain firmly in the balance.

10:30am: After a par start, Woods is eyeing a birdie on the second. Jon Rahm makes the start he needed with a birdie to take him back on par, and Jordan Spieth and Harold Varner III hit pars.

Harrington hits successive birdies to move to four under and Sergio Garcia sinks a storming putt from distance to go one under. Terrific shot.

10:15am: Fourteen years after winning the second of his successive Open titles, Padraig Harrington proves his participation is worth more than nostalgia by moving four under after a birdie on the first.

Harrington is one shot behind Kim Si-Woo, whose second birdie of the morning takes him to five under.

10am: Woods, Matt Fitzpatrick and Max Homa are all restarting their bids to make the cut. Woods has an onerous task ahead of him, having posted 78 on Thursday. Not that it will stop fans from flocking to watch him try.

9.45am: In his third Open, Englishman Marcus Armitage has posted three birdies today to put himself four under with an assured display.

Casey has a second birdie, and we're around 15 minutes away from Tiger Woods teeing off following a difficult first day for the golf icon.

9.30am: Dustin Johnson has hit a birdie on the third to atone for his opening bogey, taking him to four under.

Two-time champion Sergio Garcia was three over at the end of the first day, and he's reduced that to two over with four straight pars and a birdie so far today.

9.15am: Former amateur number one Joaquin Niemann has had a tricky time of it on the second, requiring a huge putt for a bogey after sending an attempt wildly far to the left. He finishes with a double and is one under with ample time to recover.

9am: Johnson follows up his bogey by shooting on par, and Gooch sends a tricky putt wide to miss out on a birdie. Weather watch: the rain has become a little heavier.

8.45am: The pin on the first is only seven yards over the Swilcan Burn waterway that is the best-known hazard on the green.

Scottie Scheffler's just hit a bogey and Englishman Paul Casey has made a bright start, claiming a birdie on his second hole.

8.30am: Talor Gooch has produced an impressive performance this morning. He's just earned his second birdie to post six under, which puts him level in second with McIlroy. The American was clearly excited about being here, and his enthusiasm has translated into success on the course.

8.15am: We've seen birdies aplenty already today, and the early starters are likely to go lower again on the fresher greens, as was the case on the first day. Dustin Johnson, who hit 68 yesterday, has just teed off.

8am: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' coverage of the second day of the Open. The first element to mention is the weather: while conditions were tropical on the first day of play, it's much cooler today, and there's even been rain on the course.
