His toughest stretch of the day came on six through 11 when he bogeyed on five of six holes, including three straight.
Hoffman began Friday with a 4-stroke lead, the largest lead after the opening round at the Masters in 62 years. He made nine birdies for a 7-under 65 on a blustery day at Augusta Nation. He was 10 shots better than the average score Thursday at Augusta National.
The 40-year-old Hoffman is playing in just his fourth Masters, but he has had success at Augusta. He's finished in the top 30 in all three appearances, including 2015 when he opened the tournament with a 67 that had him tied for second behind eventual champion Jordan Spieth. Hoffman ended up finishing tied for ninth.
