U.S. Open leaderboard 2017: Brian Harman is the leader heading into Sunday image

Round 3 of the 2017 U.S. Open golf tournament began at 9:26 a.m. ET Saturday at Erin Hills golf course in Hartford, Wis.

Excellent Round 2 weather helped keep scores low Friday, but not for the world's top three golfers: Dustin Johnson, Rory Mcllroy and Jason Day all missed the cut. Eight of the world's top-12 are all packing their bags to head home early. From that group, Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth are the only survivors.

Many of the players at the top of leaderboard are in pursuit of their first major. Brian Harman leads at -12, followed by Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood at -11.

Fowler (-6) started Round 2 atop the leaderboard but finished the day one stroke back. Brooks Koepka, Brian Harman, Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood sit above Fowler all tied at 7-under.

Johnson, McIlroy and Day shot 4 over, 5 over and 10 over par, respectively, for the first two rounds. It is the first time since 1986 that the world's top three golfers all missed a cut at a major.

Brian Harman will enter Sunday as the leader at -12. Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are -11.

Harman sinks a birdie on the 15th hole and he's tied for the lead.

Look out field, here comes Rickie Fowler. He makes his third straight birdie to improve to -10.

Harman's tee shot on the par-four 15th hole finds the middle of the fairway. He'll have a chance to go up-and-down for birdie.

Fleetwood looks confident as he sinks a birdie putt on 15 to improve to -12 and take sole possession of the lead.

Koepka misplays a long birdie putt on the 15th green and it veers left. He'll stay at -10, one shot back of the leaders.

Harman plays the 14th green perfectly to birdie the hole and join the leaders at -11.

Fleetwood makes do with a tough lie for his second shot on the 15th. He'll have a 10-foot putt for birdie.

Koepka's chip on the 15th hole stops about 18 feet from the cup.

Fleetwood shouts 'Fore' after his tee shot on the 14th hole. It remains just within play but nearly hit a spectator.

Fowler birdies the 15th hole, his second straight, to improve to two shots back of the leaders.

Koepka birdies the par-five 14th hole to improve to -10.

Fleetwood's chip on the 14th hole rolls within inches of the cup, setting him up to make birdie and share the lead at -11.

Si Woo Kim goes up-and-down on the 15th hole to improve to -9.

Harman misses a birdie putt on the 13th hole that would've given him a share of the lead at -11.

Holmes' eagle putt on the 15th rolls past the hole, to the right. That one never really had a chance, but he should have an easy birdie putt.

Si Woo Kim gets some get backspin on his chip on the 15th hole, setting up a birdie putt. He had backed away from his shot due to the gallery being too noisey.

Fowler pushes his birdie putt on the 14th hole but he gets it to drop. He improves to -8.

Johnny Miller is a little salty over Justin Thomas' third round and the course setup at Erin Hills.

Fowler's third shot on the par-five 14th lands in the middle of the green, then rolls to within 12 feet of the hole.

Cameron Champ, the low amateur, birdies the 15th hole to remain two shots ahead of fellow amateur Scottie Scheffler.

Koepka's uphill birdie putt on the 13th hole comes up short. He'll remain at -9 as his nearly muffs the putt on the par-three.

Fowler chips within two feet of the hole on No. 13 to set him up for bogie. That's hirst first since the eighth hole. He drops to -7.

Thomas finishes with a 63 for the best single round in U.S. Open history. He gets an eagle on the 18th and keeps the solo leader spot at -11.

Thomas takes over the lead at 9-under (-7 for the day).

There are now seven players tied for the lead right now. Fowler, Koepka, Thomas, Hoffman, Fleetwood, Harman and Reed are all -8.

Wondering what the USGA is thinking right now?

Reed finishes Round 3 with a score of 65 to bring him to 8-under. That's good enough for a 4-way tie for second right now.

Spieth finished today at +4.

Charley Hoffman takes the sole lead through 8. He's at 9-under.

Who said the U.S. Open would be boring when the top golfers in the world missed the cut??

Reed birdies again, for his 7th of the day. He joins Koepka and Fleetwood at -8.

Last group has teed off and the top spots at the U.S. Open are up for grabs.

Two of the younger players in the mix, Champ (a) and Schauffele, have just teed off. They are 5-under and 2 shots back of the leading group at -7.

Spieth is missing just about every putt to the right. The No. 5 player in the world is running out of time at 1 over thru 14.

Justin Thomas. Great pants, better putt.

Louis Oosthuizen is 5-under through 11. He's just 2 back from the leaders.

Patrick Reed is making a move. He has birdied three holes in a row to bring him to 4-under. The top groups on the leaderboard start to tee off in about an hour.

For everyone who said Erin Hills was meant to favor those with the longest drives, think again.

And the USGA said they were sure greens would play tougher on Saturday...

USGA is still out on the course setting hole locations. Trying to stay ahead of first pair of Webb Simpson and Tyler Light who are on the 11th hole.

Almost all of the top picks have already packed their bags. With the field wide open, here's a look at updated odds in Round 3 of the U.S. Open:

It's moving day at the U.S. Open and good to note as Round 3 starts, the leaderboard is very tight. The 68 players who made the cut are all separated by just eight strokes. Anyone who gets on a roll will have a chance to challenge the mix at the top of the leaderboard.

Some notable names out on the course already are Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson. They are both at 2-under for the day on the third hole.

Have you ever served burnt Elk? Rory McIlroy has. He missed the cut heading into Saturday, but still left Erin Hills a winner — at least on social media. In case you missed his Twitter-battle with Steve Elkington, McIlroy fired back against Elkington's comments.
