Davis Love III says Tiger Woods is future Ryder Cup captain image

Davis Love III will soon make his final Ryder Cup picks after the automatic eight spots on Team USA are filled up following The Barclays this week. It appears vice captain Tiger Woods will play a large part in influencing his decision.

In the latest episode of "The American Captain," the Ryder Cup's weekly video installment, Love explained the process involved when he decided to select Woods, Tom Lehman, Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk — who is still trying to make the team as a player — as his vice captains.

Love was especially complimentary of Woods, saying he was his best "tactician."

"He'll be a future captain, so he's got to be a part of the decision-making process of this whole new Ryder Cup committee," Love said. "Tiger is more interested in the strategy side of it — rounding out the team with picks, or making small groups, making pairings. He's our tactician more than anything. And he's really been helpful on how to prepare for a major championship.

"He's like me. He's excited about it, he doesn't sleep much, he puts a lot of thought into it. There's a reason why he's arguably one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He knows how to prepare, he knows how to think his way around a golf course, around a golf tournament. He's committed to being a part of it and he means it."

Woods has played in seven Ryder Cups during his career, amassing a disappointing 13-17-3 record in 33 matches. Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary since he last played on the PGA Tour (2015 Wyndham Championship), but he remains focused on making a comeback and helping the Ryder Cup team finally beat Europe.
